Best Practices: Connection

One of the most powerful influences on student learning is something simple but essential: connection. Strong relationships between educators and students shape motivation, engagement, behavior, and a student’s willingness to persist through challenge.

Research on relationship-building in schools highlights that small, intentional interactions often have the greatest impact on how students experience school and learning.

Connection is built in everyday moments

Connection is not created through one-time gestures but through consistent, ordinary interactions that communicate respect and care. Simple actions like greeting students by name, offering brief check-ins, or acknowledging effort may seem small, but over time they shape trust, belonging, and classroom culture.

1. Prioritize consistent, positive interactions

Daily routines of positive contact help establish a strong foundation for learning.

This can include greeting students, using names intentionally, and offering brief encouragement or recognition throughout the day.

These small moments build predictability and a sense of belonging.

2. Balance feedback with recognition

Relationships are strengthened when communication includes more than correction. When students regularly hear recognition of effort, growth, and strengths alongside feedback, they are more likely to feel seen as individuals and stay engaged in their learning.

This balance also strengthens communication between home and school, supporting a more collaborative approach to student growth.

3. Keep expectations high within supportive relationships

Strong relationships do not lower expectations. They make them more effective. Students are more willing to engage in challenge, respond to feedback, and persist through difficulty when they feel supported by the adults guiding them.

Connection is not an additional task. It is embedded in how we interact every day. Small, consistent moments build the foundation for trust, engagement, and growth.

Best Practices is a monthly resource shared by our Dean of Academics with faculty, designed to highlight research-based ideas and practical strategies to support reflection and professional growth across our school community.
