Chaviva’s annual Fall Professional Development Day offered a meaningful opportunity for our faculty to reconnect with the belief statements that guide our mission. These statements emphasize actively engaging students, encouraging authentic questions, and igniting a passion for lifelong learning. The day focused on strengthening our commitment to providing a rigorous yet accessible academic program that empowers every student to reach her fullest potential.

A key session, led by Mrs. Schabes, explored Webb’s Depth of Knowledge (DOK) framework. Teachers examined the progression of cognitive challenge and discussed how intentional lesson design can move students toward deeper thinking, richer discussion, and more genuine engagement with the material. This reflective work reinforced an important truth: rigor and accessibility are not opposites. When done thoughtfully, they work together to support meaningful growth for every learner.

Mr. Hopkins and Mrs. Fleksher facilitated conversations about the role of Honors-level coursework and modified course pathways. Faculty discussed how to maintain high expectations while ensuring that each student has the structures, support, and opportunities she needs to succeed academically, emotionally, and intellectually.

The centerpiece of the day was a dynamic and hands-on workshop with guest presenter Mr. Ben Cohen, an expert in using AI to enhance instructional practice. He guided teachers through creative and responsible ways to incorporate AI into planning, assessment design, differentiation strategies, and classroom support. His presentation was energizing and practical, equipping our faculty with new tools to make learning even more responsive and impactful.

By the end of the day, teachers left inspired and aligned, carrying forward new ideas and renewed clarity about what it means to teach with purpose. They remain committed to supporting students with care, challenging them with intention, and ensuring that every learning experience reflects the values at the heart of Chaviva.
