Our Curriculum
חומש - The Power of Choice
.5 credits
This course details the stories that led up to שעבוד מצרים, ultimately culminating in יציאת מצרים, with a special focus on the lives and leadership of יוסף הצדיק and משה רבינו. The goal of the class is to gain a solid understanding of the struggle and pain caused by שנאת חנם as well as the circumstances and נסים that occurred at the time of our יציאה. Some thematic questions that are addressed: What causes slavery, and how do we bring about גאולה? What were some of the unique מדות displayed by יוסף הצדיק and משה רבינו that we can learn from? A strong emphasis is put on beginning to develop the ability to independently prepare a wide variety of meforshim.
נביא - Journey to Malchus

In this course, students study שמואל א and שמואל ב, exploring recurring themes such as leadership and struggle, arrogance and humility, obedience to Hashem, and the balance between faith and action. Skill development focuses on translating פּסוקים and מפרשים and comprehending the main ideas of each פּרק without needing to translate every word. Students gain comfort with the expressions, grammar, and speaker transitions in נביא. They also discuss hashkafic insights and thematic lessons that emerge from each פּרק. The overarching goal of the course is to strengthen and deepen students’ belief in Hashem and foster a lifelong love for learning תנ"ך.
כתובים - The King’s Prayer

This course covers ספר תהלים and provides a basic understanding of the מזמור with a deep focus on applications to students’ daily lives. This ספר is chosen to align with the study of the life of דוד המלך in their studies in נביא. Students learn the historical background of each פּרק, explore the simple translation of the text, discuss key concepts, and learn outside מפרשים. The ultimate goal is to apply the מזמור and its lessons to students’ lives, specifically through studying which קבנה to have and relating the text to specific life scenarios.
אמונה - I Believe
.12 credits
This is a foundational course that focuses on understanding what faith truly means and how it manifests in real life. Students explore the definition of אמונה, what it means to believe in Hashem, and how it is different from בטחון. Students study the Rambam’s 13 Principles of Faith with the goals of understanding and applying the concepts to their own lives, applying ideas of faith to real-life situations, and strengthening their relationship with Hashem.
English: Conflict and Literature
.5 credits
In 10th-grade English, students will learn to answer the following essential questions: What is the nature of conflict? How can we productively face conflict and differences in our world? How does bias affect how we approach conflict? The focus of this course is to focus on developing students’ reading, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills as well as to further foster an appreciation for literature and the language arts. Texts explored in this course include Rose’s Twelve Angry Men, Knowles’s A Separate Peace, Wilder’s Our Town, and Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, as well as a multitude of short stories, poems, and student-selected texts to broaden the scope of students’ understanding of literature and literary tradition. Students also study vocabulary and the mechanics of language and grammar in order to strengthen writing at the technical and stylistic level.
Modern American History
.5 credits
This course examines the history of the United States of America from 1877 to the present. The federal republic has withstood challenges to its national security and expanded the rights and roles of its citizens. The episodes of its past have shaped the nature of the country today and prepared it to attend to the challenges of tomorrow. Understanding how these events came to pass and their meaning for today’s citizens is the purpose of this course. The concepts of historical thinking introduced in earlier grades continue to build with students locating and analyzing primary and secondary sources from multiple perspectives to draw conclusions. This course also prepares students for Ohio’s State Test.
Algebra I
.5 credits
The 10th-grade Algebra course continues building critical thinking and problem-solving skills as students learn and apply the foundational concepts of Algebra. Course content includes linear equations, scatter plots, systems of equations, polynomials, quadratic equations and functions, and exponential functions. This course also prepares students for Ohio’s State Test.
STEM
.5 credits
This course is based on the Center for Initiatives in Jewish Education’s STEM education program. It provides a challenging and rigorous program of study focusing on the application of STEM subjects and offers courses and pathways for preparation in STEM fields and occupations. It also prepares students for successful college and university STEM education. Curriculum content includes electricity and circuits, Arduino basics, and advanced Arduino topics. The course culminates with the Capstone Project in which students perform scientific research on a topic of their interest and create a research proposal, abstract, prototype, and website.
Human Anatomy
.12 credits
This course introduces students to the structure and function of the human body with a focus on the major organ systems. Students will explore how the circulatory, respiratory, digestive, excretory, integumentary, immune, nervous, skeletal, muscular, endocrine, and reproductive systems work individually and together to maintain health and balance.
Leadership
.12 credits
What qualities and characteristics make an effective leader? In this course, students delve into the topic of leadership and then engage in a semester-long project, crafting a business plan that culminates in a professional presentation to Chaviva’s Board of Directors.
