Our Curriculum
חומש - Lessons for Life
.5 credits
This course covers numerous topics throughout ספר דברים, including the עשרת ההדברות שמע, תשובה, יראת ה׳, אהבת ה׳, תפילה ,מוסר. Some topics will be covered בעיון and others בקיאות. Course objectives include further developing students’ חומש and מפרשים skills, gaining a familiarity with the content of ספר דברים, developing a greater understanding of the profundity of the Torah, and igniting a passion for lifelong learning.
נביא - Prophecy for the Ages
.5 credits
This course covers the נביאים of ירמיהו, ישיהו & יונה with a deep focus on applications from the נביא in our current times and daily lives. Students are encouraged to ask and answer questions, as well as be active participants in the class. Course objectives include applying historical background to the נביא, exploring the simple translation of the text, discussing key concepts of the נבואה, engaging in a detailed study of outside מפרשים, and applying the נבואה and its lessons to life.
כתובים - Exile and Redemtpion
.25 credits
This course explores the ספרים of מגילת אסתר, ספר דניאל, & מגילת איכה. The events and נבואות of these ספרים occurred during the time preceding the חרבן בית ראשון through the seventy years of גלות בבל. The נבואות of ירמיהו pleading with the Jewish people to do תשובה and his warnings of destruction in מגילת איכה are addressed. A main focus of ספר דניאל is how דניאל, together with his colleagues, established the foundation for elite Torah scholarship and a staunch commitment to its values in גלות בבל. In מגילת אסתר, students delve into אסתר’s poignant personal sacrifice and Hashem’s salvation of the Jews towards the end of גלות בבל. Students use the texts to analyze many relevant and thought-provoking themes.
Penimi - The Beauty of Internality
.25 credits
The focus of this curriculum is to present צניעות in a manner that fosters appreciation and understanding of the depth and beauty of this מצוה and to work through the resistance and negativity that are prone to surface when exploring the subject of צניעות. The goal of the course is to facilitate internal acceptance of the הלכות and השקפות of צניעות. The sources and הלכות of צניעות are developed in an intellectually stimulating format and encourage each student to process the concepts internally and gradually.
English: Identity and Literature
.5 credits
In 12th-grade English, students will learn to answer the following essential questions: How do authors explore complex identities within a text? How can making connections between text and self deepen my understanding of my own identity? The focus of this course is to develop students’ reading, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills as well as further foster an appreciation for literature and the language arts. Texts include Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, as well as a multitude of short stories, poems, and student-selected texts to broaden the scope of our understanding of literature and literary tradition. Students also study vocabulary and the mechanics of language and grammar in order to strengthen writing at the technical and stylistic level.
Statistics
.5 credits
This course helps students develop the knowledge and critical thinking skills necessary to become discerning and educated consumers of statistics. It offers students first-hand experience in data collection, experimentation, and statistical analysis. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics are the main focus of this course.
Personal Finance
.12 credits
This course focuses on the five key components of financial literacy: earn, spend, save, invest, borrow, and protect. The goal is to impart the set of skills and knowledge that allows an individual to make informed and effective decisions with all of their financial resources. Over the course of this semester, students study key concepts of financial literacy, working through simulated experiences to increase their understanding of personal finance.
Health/Nutrition
.12 credits
This course provides an in-depth exploration of building a healthy life, a highly relevant topic to students' lives. The first semester focuses on the importance of nutrition, covering each of the macronutrients—carbohydrates, lipids, and protein—and their impact on overall health. The second semester covers physical activity, substance abuse, and mental health topics. Students will leave the course confident in their abilities to build healthy habits and make thoughtful choices to protect their mental and physical health.
Psychology
.12 credits
This course gives students a solid understanding of the human mind and behavior. Students tap into current research to explore topics such as thinking, motivation, personality, and mental health. With real-life applications, interactive activities, class discussions, and relevant assignments and projects, students are able to apply the curriculum to their everyday lives.
Senior Internship
.12 credits
In this final project of our seniors’ high school career, students spend two weeks experiencing life in the professional world. Students have the opportunity to join the fields of healthcare, law, real estate, mental health, small businesses, and many more. This opportunity enlightens our students to new possibilities and sparks curiosity and motivation for the future that lays ahead.
Senior Chessed Project
.12 credits
During the second semester of Senior year, students are tasked with looking beyond themselves and determining a need that could be filled in their community. Students propose a chessed project to the administration, and once approved, invest time each week executing their plan. The experience is meant to broaden students’ focus at a time of transition and uncertainty, to ground them in the power of selflessness and responsibility.
