Curriculum Overview

At Chaviva High School, we set the standard high for academic achievement. 
We believe that when a student is challenged, her accomplishments become that much more meaningful.
 
In our Judaic studies classes, girls are introduced to Torah as a source of Divine inspiration and connection.  The goal of each lesson includes finding the relevance and meaning in the words of Torah they are learning, as well as building key textual skills that will enable our students to learn independently.
 
In our General studies classes, we utilize the curriculum as a means to invite our students into the learning process and cultivate an environment of curiosity and exploration. We seek to genuinely engage our students in the material, broaden and deepen their knowledge base, foster critical-thinking skills, and develop a desire for life-long learning.

Each course offered incorporates a high level of academic rigor while offering support and encouragement for all students to succeed. Teachers assume the responsibility of knowing each student's strengths and weaknesses, so they are equipped with the knowledge necessary to help each girl reach her own unique potential.

General Studies

English: Knowledge and Literature

In 9th-grade English, students will learn to answer the following essential questions: What does it mean to learn and know? Why do we learn? How can we use the knowledge we acquire? Is there such a thing as learning, or knowing, too much? The focus of 9th-grade English is to develop students’ reading, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills as well as further foster an appreciation for literature and the language arts. Texts explored in this course include Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Shakespeare’s Hamlet, and Shaw’s Pygmalion, as well as a multitude of short stories, poems, and student-selected texts to broaden the scope of students’ understanding of literature and literary tradition. Students also study vocabulary and the mechanics of language and grammar in order to strengthen writing at the technical and stylistic level.

World History

This course examines world events from 1600 to the present. It explores the impact of the democratic and industrial revolutions, the forces that led to world domination by European powers, the wars that changed empires, the ideas that led to independence movements, and the effects of global interdependence. The concepts of historical thinking introduced in earlier grades continue to build with students locating and analyzing primary and secondary sources from multiple perspectives to draw conclusions.

Geometry

9th-grade Geometry continues building critical thinking and problem-solving skills by learning and applying the foundational concepts of Geometry. Students learn about relationships between geometric figures and apply them to real-life situations as they build mathematical literacy. Course content includes basic geometry concepts, the Pythagorean Theorem, formulas, proofs, angles, polygons, area, and volume. This course also prepares students for Ohio’s State Test.

Biology

In this course, students delve into an understanding of the basic principles of life processes, cellular biology, biochemistry, genetics, and ecology. Students develop the technique of scientific inquiry and learn about the nature of science throughout the year. Lab sessions focus on scientific inquiry, the application of the metric system, and experiments that enhance the students' understanding of conceptual material learned in class. This course also prepares students for Ohio’s State Test.

Public Speaking

9th-grade Public Speaking is a semester-long course designed to give students the tools to prepare and deliver speeches effectively. The principles learned and skills developed in this course will enable students to become better communicators in various aspects of life. Course objectives include building confidence, developing listening skills, evaluating speakers, mastering public speaking terminology, researching sources, and speech development and delivery.

Judaic Studies
